LE 1 MAI ET SES DIVERSES
SIGNIFICATIONS : quelques données non exhaustives !
Aux États-Unis, au
cours de leur congrès de 1884, les syndicats américains se donnent deux ans
pour imposer aux patrons une limitation de la journée de travail à huit heures.
Ils choisissent de lancer leur action le 1er mai, date du moving day parce que
beaucoup d’entreprises américaines entament ce jour-là leur année comptable, et
que les contrats ont leur terme ce jour-là, l'ouvrier devant déménager (d'où le
terme de moving day) pour retrouver du travail. La grève générale du 1er mai
1886, impulsée par les anarchistes, est largement suivie8. Ils sont environ 340
000 dans tout le pays.
À Chicago, la grève se
prolonge dans certaines entreprises, et le 3 mai 1886, une manifestation fait
trois morts parmi les grévistes de la société McCormick Harvester. Le lendemain
a lieu une marche de protestation et dans la soirée, tandis que la manifestation
se disperse à Haymarket Square, il ne reste plus que 200 manifestants face à
autant de policiers.
C’est alors qu'une
bombe explose devant les forces de l’ordre. Elle fait un mort dans les rangs de
la police. Sept autres policiers sont tués dans la bagarre qui s’ensuit. À la
suite de cet attentat, cinq syndicalistes anarchistes sont condamnés à mort
(Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer, George Engel, August Spies et Louis Lingg) ;
quatre seront pendus le vendredi 11 novembre 1887 (connu depuis comme Black Friday
ou « vendredi noir ») malgré l’inexistence de preuves, le dernier (Louis Lingg)
s’étant suicidé dans sa cellule. Trois autres sont condamnés à perpétuité.
En 1889, la IIe
Internationale socialiste se réunit à Paris, à l'occasion du centenaire de la
Révolution française et de l’exposition universelle.
Sous l’impulsion de
Jules Guesde et de son PO (parti
ouvrier) ,Guesde inventera le terme de « fêtes du travail » en 1890, et sur une
proposition de Raymond Lavigne, cette Internationale décide le 20 juillet 1889
de faire de chaque 1er mai une journée de manifestation avec pour objectif la
réduction de la journée de travail à huit heures (soit 48 heures hebdomadaires,
le dimanche seul étant chômé)
Le 1er mai 1890,
l'événement est ainsi célébré dans la plupart des pays, avec des participations
diverses.
Le 1er mai 1891, à
Fourmies, dans le Nord, en France, la manifestation tourne au drame : la police
tire sur les ouvriers et fait neuf morts (voir la Fusillade de Fourmies et
affaire de Clichy). Avec ce nouveau drame, le 1er mai s’enracine dans la
tradition de lutte des ouvriers européens. Les militants épinglent une
églantine écarlate (Rosa canina ou Rosa rubiginosa), fleur traditionnelle du
Nord, en souvenir du sang versé et en référence à Fabre d'Eglantine.
Quelques mois plus
tard, à Bruxelles, l'Internationale socialiste renouvelle le caractère
revendicatif et international du 1er mai………………..
En 1893, le gouverneur
de l'Illinois John Peter Altgeld gracie les 3 syndicalistes encore détenus, en
raison de la fragilité de l'enquête et du processus judiciaire 9. Un extrait de
ce pardon est gravé sur sa stèle au Graceland Cemetery de Chicago.
On peut remarquer des
différences dans plusieurs pays sur la façon dont la fête du travail est
pratiquée. Au Canada et aux États-Unis, la fête du travail est un jour férié du
mois de septembre. En Australie, elle est fêtée à différentes dates proches du
printemps ou de l’automne.
Dans certains pays,
comme la France, elle se confond avec la journée internationale des
travailleurs, fête internationale instaurée à l'origine comme journée annuelle
de grève pour revendiquer la journée de huit heures, qui devint au XXe siècle
une journée de célébration des combats des travailleurs. Elle est célébrée le
1er mai dans de nombreux pays du monde et est l’occasion d’importantes
manifestations du mouvement syndical pour rappeler les revendications sociales
et les exigences de droits. Cependant tout en coïncidant avec la fête du muguet
,ces dernières années dans nombre de pays européen les mobilisations sociales
sont bien moindres que durant les années 50/70 pour ne pas remonter trop loin
en arrière. Dans l’ancien bloc socialiste de l’Est le1er mai coïncidait à de
gigantesques démonstrations. Depuis
l’écroulement des régimes cette journée n’ a plus la même signification.
Présentement, cette
journée est souvent un jour férié. Elle est parfois associée à d’autres
festivités ou traditions populaires ce qui explique en partie la participation
moindre aux défilés syndicaux.
Cette année, en France,
les syndicats seront divisés, ils ne manifesteront pas tous et ensemble, ceci,
bien que le climat social soit tendu avec de nombreux conflits unitaires, mais
pas encore des convergences nationales interprofessionnelles ! A suivre, car
cette année correspond avec le cinquantième anniversaire des événements de mai
et juin 1968 ! Cependant, les luttes sociales ne se décrètent pas par
procuration ou par nostalgie, mais à partir de mécontentements de catégories
sociales qui peuvent agréger leurs forces, ceci, lorsque les colères sociales
deviennent évidentes et partagées. Ces derniers jours, avec les étudiants,
d’autres secteurs ont participé aux luttes : Air France, les électriciens et
gaziers, mais également du secteur privé. Les Ephads, personnels des hôpitaux,
sont en lutte depuis quelque temps, sans parler du conflit particulier à Notre
Dame des Landes où des propositions alternatives s’agissant de la gestion des
terre set des modes d’élevage et de production se heurtent au fonctionnement
légal et habituel des normes étatiques.
Ainsi : plus de 500
villes de par le monde font du 1 mai le jour global de l’amour et de l‘harmonie

On May 1st AND ITS VARIOUS
SIGNIFICANCES: some nonexhaustive data!
In the United States,
during their congress of 1884, the American trade unions are given two years to
impose to the owners a limitation of the work day on eight hours. They choose
throw their action on May 1st, dates from the moving day because many American
companies start this day their countable year, and that the contracts have
their term this day, the blue-collar worker having to move (from where the term
of moving day) to find work. The general strike of May 1st, 1886, impelled by
the anarchists, is largely suivie8. They are approximately 340,000 in all the
country.
In Chicago, the strike
is prolonged in certain companies, and on May 3rd, 1886, a demonstration causes
three deaths among the strikers of the company McCormick Harvester. The
following day takes place a walk of protest and in the evening, while the
demonstration disperses in Haymarket Square, there remain nothing any more but
200 demonstrators vis-a-vis as many police officers.
At this point in time a
bomb explodes in front of the police. She causes a death in the rows of the
police. Seven other police officers are killed in the brawl which follows.
Following this attack, five anarchistic trade unionists are prisoners under
sentence of death (Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer, George Engel, August Spies
and Louis Lingg); four will be hung on Friday, November 11, 1887 (known since
like Black Friday or “Friday black”) in spite of the inexistence of evidence,
the last (Louis Lingg) being committed suicide in its cell. Three others are
condemned to perpetuity.
In 1889, the 2rd
Socialist International meets in Paris, at the time of the centenary of the
French revolution and the World Fair.
Under the impulse of
Jules Guesde and his PO (left working), Guesde will invent the term of “Labor
Daies” in 1890, and on a proposal of Raymond Lavigne, this International
decides on July 20th, 1889 to make each May 1st one day of demonstration with
for objective the reduction of the work day at eight hours (either 48 hours
weekly, Sunday alone being been unemployed)
On May 1st, 1890, the
event is thus celebrated in most country, with various participations.
On May 1st, 1891, in
Fourmies, in North, in France, the demonstration turns to the drama: the police
shoots at the blue-collar workers and causes nine deaths (see the Shooting of
Fourmies and business of Clichy). With this new drama, on May 1st roots in the
tradition of fight of the European blue-collar workers. The militants pin a
scarlet wild rose (Rosa canina or Rosa rubiginosa), traditional flower of
North, in remembering versed blood and reference to Fabre d'Églantine.
A few months later, in
Brussels, the Socialist International renews the claiming and international
character of May 1st ....................
In 1893, the governor
of Illinois John Peter Altgeld reprieves the 3 still held trade unionists,
because of the brittleness of the investigation and the legal process 9. An
extract of this forgiveness is engraved on its stele in Graceland Cemetery of
Chicago.
One can notice
differences in several countries on the way in which the Labor Day is
practiced. In Canada and the United States, the Labor Day is one bank holiday
of September. In Australia, she is celebrated on various dates close to spring
or the autumn.
In certain countries,
like France, it merges with the international day of the workers, celebrates
international founded at the origin like annual day of strike to assert the
eight hours day, which became at the 20th century one day of celebration of the
combat of the workers. It is celebrated on May 1st in many countries of the
world and is the occasion of big demonstrations of the trade union movement to
point out the social claims and the requirements of rights. However while
coinciding with the festival of the lily of the valley, these last years in
number of European countries the social mobilizations are quite less than
during years 50/70 not to go up too much far behind. In the old socialist block
of the East le1er May coincided with gigantic demonstrations. Since the
collapse of the modes this day does not have any more the same meaning.
At present, this day is
often a bank holiday. It is sometimes associated with other popular festivities
or traditions what partly explains the less participation in the trade-union
processions.
This year, in France,
the trade unions will be divided, they will not express all and together, this,
although the social climate is tended with many unit conflicts, but not yet of
interprofessional national convergences! To follow, because this year
corresponds with the fiftieth birthday of the events of May and June 1968!
However, the social struggles are not issued by procuration or nostalgia, but
starting from dissatisfactions with social categories which can incorporate
their forces, this, when social angers become obvious and divided. These last
days, with the students, other sectors took part in the fights: Air France,
electricians and gas, but also of the private sector. Ephads, staffs of the
hospitals, are in fight for some time, without speaking of conflict particular
to Notre Dame of the Moors where alternative propositions as regards the
management of the ground set of the modes of breeding and production run up
against legal and usual operation official standards.
As follows: more than
500 cities all over the world make of May 1st the total day of the love and L `
harmony !
