Homage and recall with the royal family

British after the death of prince Philippe!

In 1957 and 1958, Mario Lanza will give a series of concerts in Europe: England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Germany. On November 18th, 1957, he will sing with the Palladium of London in the presence of the Queen Elizabeth of England, of the royal family, which he greeted after the concert, and of 2,300 spectators, for the Official reception of charity of Variety Club where he is “the” star in front of two other celebrities, Judy Garland and Count Basie.

The public which had never heard it “in live” is amazed by the power and the quality of the voice. The London press is enthusiastic and unanimous. The News Chronicle: “The voice of Mario Lanza in concert is nothing less than splendid”

For the concert of January 16th, 1958, to the Royal Albert Hall of London, one sold even tickets for places on the scene. Mario Lanza sings without microphone in front of 8000 people piled up in this immense cave with deplorable acoustics where the voice can be lost and become inaudible, as that arrived at Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

This concert, only recorded this European round, was a triumph: the Lanza man appeared there, while speaking with intelligence, kindness and impishness, creating a bond obvious and moving with the public. (Mario Lanza Live from London). The tenor Nicolaï Gedda, present in the room, declares: “It is the greatest voice which I ever heard! ”

Richard Bonynge, director of the opera of London, and his wife, the soprano Joan Sutherland, who attended this concert, will declare: “We knew that in films the voice is amplified, but we do not expect to hear a voice of a similar dimension nor of such a musical quality. There is no doubt that Mario Lanza could have made a fantastic career with the Opera”.
